Mrs. Vijayalaxmi Chhabra, a trailblazing career broadcaster with 35 years of experience working with All India Radio and Doordarshan. As a committed public broadcaster, she retired as the Director General of Doordarshan, the world’s largest public service broadcaster.

A Commonwealth Fellow, she has a treasure trove of stories to share.
She is an alumni of prestigious Indraprastha College for Women, Delhi which is currently celebrating its centenary year.

One of her most remarkable experiences was her mid-career shift to sales and marketing during Doordarshan’s cricket telecast rights era. She pioneered the setup of Doordarshan’s Sales & Marketing Division, which previously operated through middlemen. This bold and risky move showcased her determination.

Who can forget the unexpected tagline “Pepsi Cup brought to you by Coca-Cola”? It took immense grit to make it happen. At a time when public service broadcasting and commercial broadcasting seemed worlds apart, she bridged the gap by convincing the advertising industry to sponsor almost every DD program.

After retiring, Vijayalaxmi took to social media like a fish to water. On Instagram, she transformed her platform into a stunning showcase for saree storytelling, a passion she nurtured throughout her working life. Sarees became a catalyst for a whole new world, where she inspires hundreds of younger women to appreciate the garment, learn about its history, and carry forward the tradition.

As a popular influencer and exceptional storyteller, Vijayalaxmi is an inspiration to many. By taking on a system that often invisibilizes older women, she proves that age is just a number.
